Darryl Erez-Hutchison

I moved to Tel Aviv five years ago having grown up in Northern Ireland and much of my recent work draws on themes of displacement and relocation.

a patchwork tapestry of identity that is underpinned by references to geographical and cultural boundaries.

The contemporary discourse around nationalism and the undercurrent of conflict and resolution that is inherent in re-negotiating identity in a new context is echoed in the formal aspects of my painting through layered forms that drift in and out of focus.

What is visible and what is obscured is an ongoing dialogue much like the tension between representation and abstraction or intention and intuition. The surface opens and closes to expose or hide what lies beneath - past becomes present and each mark is influenced by those that came before it and somehow those that are still not made yet.

It is important for me that the paintings work fundamentally on a personal aesthetic level but that they also bear witness (at the start of the process anyway) to reflections on balance, uncertainty, resolution, the passing of time and most recently what home has come to mean.
